Sognefjord in a nutshell Winter tour

The Sognefjord is called the King of the fjords for a good reason: it is the longest fjord in Norway and the second longest in the world. During autumn the fjord and landscape display an array of different colors, while during winter you may even see snow-capped mountains, frozen waterfalls, and scenic wintery forests.

Tour Description

This tour includes a trip by express boat on the magical and sometimes icy Sognefjord, as well as train journeys through spectacular winter nature on the famous Flåm Railway and the scenic Bergen Railway.

The train journey with Flåmsbana offers panoramic views of some of the wildest and most magnificent winter nature in Norway. The boat on the Sognefjord takes about 5 hours and the boat stops in several quaint villages along its route. This gives you a great opportunity to see the "King of fjords" up close - in its "autumn colors" or "winter outfit"!

This tour requires an overnight stay in the village of Sogndal, but you can also choose to extend your journey over several days to really explore winter Norway. We especially recommend adding a night in Flåm, which gives you the opportunity to join in on several fun winter activities.

Read more about the tour highlights below, and personalize your tour by adding hotels and activities during the booking process.

One last tip: Dress warmly and bundle up - Norway and the fjords can get very cold during winter!

Tour highlights

The Sognefjord

The Sognefjord is often called "The King of fjords" and is Norway´s longest and deepest fjord. The giant fjord extends 204 km inland, has a maximum depth of 1,308 meters, and the mountains surrounding the fjord tower to heights of 2,000 meters. The region where the Sognefjord meets the glaciers and Norway’s highest mountains is considered one of the world's most beautiful winter travel destinations. The glaciers on the top of the mountains, down the steep mountainsides to green farmland, and deep fjords will definitely make a lasting impression.

The Flåm Railway

The Flam Railway is a spectacular train journey that offers a panoramic view of some of the wildest and most magnificent winter nature in the Norwegian fjord landscape. The 20 km-long train ride took 20 years to build and is one of the steepest standard gauge railway lines in the world. The train ride operates between Myrdal and Flåm and along the way you can see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls (sometimes frozen) cascading down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains, and mountain farms clinging dizzily to sheer slopes.

The Bergen Railway

The Bergen Railway is the approximately 500-kilometer-long railway line between Bergen and Oslo and has several times been named one of the world's best railway experiences. The Bergen Railway is Northern Europe's highest stretch of railway and crosses both the Langfjellene mountains and the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, with Finse as the highest station at 1222 masl. The winter scenery you can experience from the comfortable railway is simply beautiful.

The Aurlandsfjord

The Aurlandsfjord is a 17-kilometer arm of the world’s second-longest fjord, the Sognefjord, and starts in Flåm and ends at the mountain Beitelen, which separates the Aurlandsfjord from the Nærøyfjord. Together with the Nærøyfjord, the Aurlandsfjord is one of the most picturesque fjords in the world. This stunning fjord is a part of the World Heritage area and is surrounded by high snow-capped mountains that reach heights of over 1,400 meters.
