Norway in a nutshell® Winter tour

Go on a winter adventure in Norway and experience the scenic Bergen Railway, the breathtaking Flåm Railway, the narrow and dramatic Nærøyfjord, and a bus trip through the beautiful winter scenery of Western Norway.

Tour description

Traveling in Norway during winter is a special experience. On this tour, you get to enjoy magnificent winter nature on some of Europe's most beautiful train rides and take in the crisp and clean fjord air on a silent electric fjord cruise on the UNESCO-protected Nærøyfjord.

This tour is meant to give you the best fjord- and mountain scenery Western Norway has to offer, in a comfortable and sustainable way. The tour has several highlights, such as the Flam Railway- one of the world's most beautiful train journeys, a winter fjord cruise on the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord, and the Nærøydalen valley, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fjords are synonymous with "Norway" and this winter experience is designed to suit both those who want a quick one-day experience or those who want to explore the snowy fjord landscape over several days.

Travel tip

Traveling in the winter season is highly recommended since there are fewer people and more room for travelers to enjoy the view. You can complete the tour in one day, but we highly recommend that you take your time by adding overnight stays and activities along the route!

One last tip: Dress warmly and bundle up - it can get very cold in the fjords!

Tour Highlights

The Flåm Railway

The Flam Railway is a spectacular train journey that offers a panoramic view of some of the wildest and most magnificent winter nature in the Norwegian fjord landscape. The 20 km-long train ride took 20 years to build and is one of the steepest standard gauge railway lines in the world. The train ride operates between Myrdal and Flåm and along the way you can see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls (sometimes frozen) cascading down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains, and mountain farms clinging dizzily to sheer slopes.

The Nærøyfjord

The Nærøyfjord is the narrowest and best known of the many arms of the Sognefjord. Surrounded by towering mountains, this arm of the Sognefjord is amazingly beautiful. With its steep mountainsides, hanging valleys, towering peaks, waterfalls, and small hamlets, this fjord is perhaps the most outstanding natural attraction in Norway. The Nærøyfjord is 20 km long, only 250 meters across at its narrowest and a mere 12 meters at its shallowest. The surrounding mountains reach heights of 1,660 meters, and the fjord is one of the definitive highlights of this tour.

The Bergen Railway

The Bergen Railway is the approximately 500-kilometer-long railway line between Bergen and Oslo and has several times been named one of the world's best railway experiences. The Bergen Railway is Northern Europe's highest stretch of railway and crosses both the Langfjellene mountains and the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, with Finse as the highest station at 1222 masl. The winter scenery you can experience from the comfortable railway is simply beautiful.

The Aurlandsfjord

The Aurlandsfjord is a 17-kilometer arm of the world’s second-longest fjord, the Sognefjord, and starts in Flåm and ends at the mountain Beitelen, which separates the Aurlandsfjord from the Nærøyfjord. Together with the Nærøyfjord, the Aurlandsfjord is one of the most picturesque fjords in the world. This stunning fjord is a part of the World Heritage area and is surrounded by high snow-capped mountains that reach heights of over 1,400 meters.
