Spectacular Rail Journeys
You start this tour from Oslo on the Dovrebanen Railway through the beautiful valley of Gudbrandsdalen. The train runs along the Lågen river, with its turquoise meltwater from the mountain glaciers. When you arrive in Dombås, you change trains to the perhaps even more spectacular Rauma Railway. During the ride on the Rauma Railway, you will pass the impending and majestic Trollveggen Cliff (The Troll Wall), spectacular waterfalls at the Kylling Bridge, and the emerald green Rauma River.
After two amazing train journeys, you end up in Åndalsnes, beautifully located on the edge of the Romsdalsfjord. You will soon realize why this destination is so popular among Norwegians and why visitors to Norway are starting to add Åndalsnes to their bucket list. The contrasts between the fjord and the surrounding mountains are truly striking, even by Norwegian standards.
From Åndalsnes you continue on to Geiranger, but you can decide how to get there! You choose between either The Art Nouveau Route or The Trollstigen Route.
The Art Nouveau Route to Geiranger
If you choose the Art Nouveau Route you travel from Åndalsnes by bus to the Art Nouveau City of Ålesund, beautifully located on the western coast of Norway. The city is known for it's Art Noveau architecture and a wide selection of exciting activities. If you choose this option, an overnight stay in Ålesund is not only recommended but also necessary. After your stay in Ålesund, you continue to Geiranger by traveling like a local on a catamaran! The catamaran is specifically designed to enhance the fjord sightseeing experience and on the journey, you travel through beautiful fjords and spectacular landscapes.
The Trollstigen Route to Geiranger
Your second option from Åndalsnes to Geiranger is by taking the Trollstigen Route. Trollstigen is a spectacular mountain road climbing its way up along the mountain towards Geiranger. Along the route, there are several installations and viewpoints, including the Trollstigen Viewpoint (The Trolls Ladder) and Ørnesvingen. This option is a truly thrilling experience with sensational views along the way!
Geiranger - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Geiranger is situated in the innermost part of the UNESCO Geirangerfjord and is surrounded by steep mountains on either side of the fjord. Along the side of the fjord, there are a number of impressive waterfalls and abandoned farms. We highly recommend spending a night in Geiranger, as this village is full of scenic sights and exciting activities.
UNESCO Fjord Bus Tour
From Geiranger to Sogndal, you travel on Fjord Tours' own UNESCO Fjord Bus tour. The area between Geiranger and Sogndal is chock full of one-of-a-kind sights, with beautiful towns and activities. You can hop off the bus along the way to enjoy overnight stays and exciting activities. When you arrive in Sogndal, an overnight stay is required.
From Sogndal you again have the flexibility of choosing your preferred route to continue the tour. You can select either The Flåm Route or The Sognefjorden Route.
The Flåm Route
If you choose the Flåm Route you start your day with a short bus ride to Leikanger, where an express boat will take you across the Sognefjord, into the Aurlandsfjord to the charming village of Flåm. Flåm is one of the most popular destinations for tourists to visit, mainly because of your next adventure; the amazing Flåm Railway! This spectacular train journey offers panoramic views of some of the wildest and most magnificent nature in the Norwegian fjord landscape.
After a spellbinding ride on the Flåm Railway, you arrive at the top station of Myrdal. From here you travel back to your starting destination in Oslo, or to Bergen on one-way tours.
The Sognefjorden Route
The second option from Sogndal is the Sognefjorden Route. This might be the preferred option for those who want to maximize "fjord-time"! In Sogndal, you board the express boat and travel more or less the entire length of the mighty Sognefjorden to Bergen. "The King of fjords" leads out to the western coastline of Norway and as you travel south to Bergen, you can experience the rugged coastline of the Norwegian coast.
If you prefer this option, but also would like to get back to Oslo, we highly recommend traveling from Bergen to Oslo on the Original Norway in a nutshell® tour!
Have a great trip!
