Sognefjord in a nutshell Winter tour

As Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, the Sognefjord extends more than 200 km inland.

During autumn the landscapes display an array of different colors. In winter you can see snow-capped mountains, frozen waterfalls, and scenic wintery forests.

Tour description

The journey starts by taking a train ride on the famous Bergen Railway. The ride takes you through the Norwegian winter landscape and is one of the most scenic train journeys in the world.

Continuing with the Flåmsbana you will get great views of the wild and magnificent winter nature. We recommend a stopover in Flåm to join in on a fun winter activity and relax in the winter surroundings.

Last, but not least, you will experience a relaxing boat trip on the Sognefjord. The tour from Sogndal to Bergen takes about 5 hours, giving you time to enjoy panoramic views of Norway’s longest and deepest fjord.

The boat stops in several small fjord villages along its way, letting you really experience the "King of the fjords" up close.

Winter Lights in Fjord Norway

Visiting the fjords in winter means majestic views with less crowds. Enjoy the beautiful blue colors of the winter lights. Seeing the reflection of the moon in the fjord and the lit-up villages dotted along the water is a spell-binding experience.

Personalize your experience

The tour is self-guided and along the way, you stay overnight in the fjord village of Sogndal. You will arrive here in the evening, allowing you to visit one of the several excellent restaurants or cafes. We recommend walking the Fjord Path in Sogndal, a 1500-meter lit-up trail along the fjord.

You can choose to extend your journey over several days to really explore winter Norway. We suggest staying overnight in Flåm, or at least joining in on an activity here. There are several fun things to do, such as a Fjord Sauna experience, or a hiking trip with snowshoes!

Tour highlights

The Sognefjord

The Sognefjord is often called "The King of fjords" and is Norway´s longest and deepest fjord. The giant fjord extends 204 km inland, has a maximum depth of 1,308 meters, and the mountains surrounding the fjord tower to heights of 2,000 meters. The region where the Sognefjord meets the glaciers and Norway’s highest mountains is considered one of the world's most beautiful winter travel destinations. The glaciers on the top of the mountains, down the steep mountainsides to green farmland, and deep fjords will definitely make a lasting impression.

The Flåm Railway

The Flam Railway is a spectacular train journey that offers a panoramic view of some of the wildest and most magnificent winter nature in the Norwegian fjord landscape. The 20 km-long train ride took 20 years to build and is one of the steepest standard gauge railway lines in the world. The train ride operates between Myrdal and Flåm and along the way you can see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls (sometimes frozen) cascading down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains, and mountain farms clinging dizzily to sheer slopes.

The Bergen Railway

The Bergen Railway is the approximately 500-kilometer-long railway line between Bergen and Oslo and has several times been named one of the world's best railway experiences. The Bergen Railway is Northern Europe's highest stretch of railway and crosses both the Langfjellene mountains and the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, with Finse as the highest station at 1222 masl. The winter scenery you can experience from the comfortable railway is simply beautiful.
