The Sognefjord in a nutshell tour combines a beautiful boat journey on the Sognefjord, with a spectacular train journey on the Flåm Railway. Starting in Oslo, you can take the tour as a round trip with return to Oslo, or as a one way trip to Bergen. The trip can be completed in one day, or as a longer journey over several days.
The Sognefjord in a nutshell tour from Oslo
You start your from Oslo by traveling westward across the mountain plateau in central Norway, offering views of beautiful and rugged highland nature. Upon arrival in Myrdal, you change trains and take the magnificent and famous Flåm Railway. The Flåm Railway takes you down the scenic Flåm Valley to the beautiful village of Flåm.
From Flåm you take the express boat to Bergen, a beautiful 5-hour boat ride. The boat stops in several quaint villages along it's the route and gives you a great opportunity to see "the King of fjords" up close. It is possible to disembark in for instance Balestrand and stay overnight before you continue your tour the following day.
Note that on round trips with return to Oslo, you travel to Bergen the first day where an overnight stay is required. You travel back to Oslo in the opposite direction as described above by taking the boat to Flåm, the Flåm Railway to Myrdal, and the Bergen Railway back to Oslo.
We highly recommend you to take your time by adding overnight stays and activities along the route. That way you can enjoy the beautiful scenery or partake in an exciting activity such as for instance kayaking, hiking or even going on a fjord safari! There are loads of options for activities and hotels along the route, for instance in places such as in Flåm, Bergen, and Oslo.
