Sognefjord in a nutshell with glacier hiking on Nigardsbreen
This summer you can take the Sognefjord in a Nutshell tour in combination with an exciting guided glacier tour to Nigardsbreen! On the tour you will also experience the entire length of the mighty Sognefjord on a boattrip and enjoy spectacular views from Flåmsbana!
This trip is available from Oslo or Bergen. Starting from Bergen, you will among other things experience a beautiful boat trip on the Sognefjord and a spectacular train journey on the legendary Flåmsbana. The trip can be taken as a round trip with return to your starting point or as a one-way trip from Oslo to Bergen or Bergen to Oslo. The tour is available during the summer season and requires overnight stays en route.
The express boat on the Sognefjord from Bergen to Flam takes about five hours. The boat stops at several picturesque villages and towns along the route, so you'll really get to see the "King of fjords" up close. When you reach the beautiful Leikanger you disembark and continue the trip by bus to Sogndal where you stay overnight. The following day the journey continues to the Breheim Center, a museum and information centre, where you can learn more about how the glacier has shaped the fjord landscape, and why it plays an important role in climate research.
Glacier hiking on Nigardsbreen
On your glacier hiking trip you will receive all necessary equipment and an experience guide will give you an introduction to glacier hiking and safety on the glacier. On the glacier you can experience and explore the finest glacier formations and enjoy spectacular views! Parts of the route to the glacier and on the ice are quite steep. The route is made easier by means of fixed ropes and steps in the ice. Still, participants on the tour should have good balance and be in reasonably good shape.
When the glacier hiking trip is finished you travel the same way back to Sogndal and stay overnight before you continuing the next day to Leikanger. From Leikanger you take the express boat to Flåm, where the tour continues on the Flam Railway through spectacular scenery from the fjords to the mountains. At Myrdal you change trains to the Bergen Railway and travel back to Oslo or Bergen through scenic and fascinating landscape. If you start from Oslo, you travel in the opposite direction as described above.
