Hike the Icons - Preikestolen
The Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, is a massive cliff towering 604 meters above the beautiful Lysefjord. This is one of the most famous attraction in Norway and a must do for hikers. Standing on top of the Preikestolen with its amazing view and the dizzying height is a truly awe-inspiring experience.
Your hiking adventure to the Preikestolen from Bergen starts by taking a costal express bus through contrasting scenery along the western coastline of Norway. Upon arrival in Stavanger an overnight stay is required. Starting from Oslo, you first travel to Bergen by train. If you choose to start from Stavanger the bus ride from Bergen is of course not necessary.
Hiking to Preikestolen
After a relaxing night in Stavanger you are ready for your hiking adventure to Preikestolen! There are three different ways of completing this iconic hiking tour, but please note that the options may depend on season and availability.
Pulpit Rock - Off the beaten track hike (01.May - 30.Sep)
On the Off the beaten track hike you can avoid the crowds, hike in near solitude while enjoying out of this world views of Preikestolen and the Lysefjord. This option also includes a fun canoe trip!
You will be picked up in Stavanger and start your tour by crossing the Refsvatn lake in a canoe. The canoe trip takes about 30 minutes and when you you disembark on the other side of the lake, your real adventure begins by starting the hike up to the Preikestolen.
During the hike you and your guide will follow forgotten off-the-map trails which are rarely used. During the hike you will experience out-of-this-world and rarely-seen views of Preikestolen and the Lysefjord. After about 3,5 hours on foot, you’ll reach a viewpoint above Preikestolen that the majority of others only get to see in tourist brochures. You will then hike down to Preikestolen and enjoy a well-deserved break atop the impressive plateau.
Once back in Stavanger an overnight stay is both required and well deserved! If you are traveling back to Bergen, you travel by costal express bus after one or more night in Stavanger. Minimum age for this tour option is 10 years.
Pulpit Rock Sunrise Hike (01.May - 30.Sep)
The Pulpit Rock Sunrise Hike is a unique hiking adventure, guaranteed to be crowd-free! On this hike you start your day in the midst of darkness, and hike with headlamps through the morning twilight on recently upgraded trails.
Experience standing atop Preikestolen before the crowds of tourists arrive, and watch as the first deep orange beams of sunlight illuminate the steep mountain walls that tower over the Lysefjord. After an amazing hike you can finish off the morning with a well-deserved breakfast/lunch.
If you are traveling back to Bergen, you travel by costal express bus after one or more night in Stavanger. Minimum age for this tour option is 8 years.
Self-guided hike (01.May - 30.Sep)
Although we highly recommend hiking to Preikestolen with a guide, you can take the hike without one. On this tour option you take a boat and bus to the Preikestolen Mountain Lodge, which is situated about 350 meters below the Preikestolen. The hike to the top consists of slightly hilly terrain and takes between 3-4 hours.
Travel Tip & Important information
If you would like to add an extra layer to your tour, you could always spend some nights in Stavanger and take part in one of the activities on offer in Stavanger.
Unless you choose the self-guided hike, a guide will be with you during your trip. Your guide will ensure that you take the hike in a safe manner, as well as providing interesting information and stories along the way.
We have to stress the importance of being well prepared for these hikes both physically and by bringing the right equipment and supplies. We recommend that you bring hiking clothes and shoes according to the forecasted weather, food for the hike and a 30-40 L. backpack with some extra warm clothes/change of clothing in case of bad weather.
As with all outdoor activities, weather is not something humans can control. Due to the possibility of rapidly-changing weather conditions, it may be necessary to make changes to scheduled trips.
