Hike the Icons - Kjerag
The hike to Kjerag takes you through a unique and magnificent nature scenery and is the perfect backdrop for a truly memorable hiking experience. Once at the top you will also have the chance to stand on top of the famous Kjerag Boulder, an experience not for the faint-hearted! This tour also includes a fjord cruise on the beautiful Lysefjord.
Your hiking adventure to Kjerag kicks off in Bergen where you board the costal express bus towards Stavanger. The tour is done through contrasting scenery along the western coastline of Norway. If you start from Oslo you first travel to Bergen by train. Upon arrival in Stavanger an overnight stay is required.
Hiking to Kjerag and the Kjerag Boulder
After a relaxing night in Stavanger, you are ready for an early start for an autumn hike to the famous Kjerag boulder! The adventure begins by meeting up with your guide. You will then be transported by minibus to the hiking trail, which takes about 2.5 hours. During the bus ride you will pass through a variety of dramatic landscapes including mountains, fjords, and bright green valleys. You’ll begin your hike at a trail-head that’s known as the Eagle’s Nest – which one can speculate got its name because it sits a lofty 640 meters above sea level.
During Autumn, weather conditions can be unstable. As needed, the guide will adjust your equipment (ice spikes, etc.) to match the weather conditions. During the 2.5-hour hike to the boulder, you’ll encounter 3 periods of steep climbing interspersed with 2 shallow valleys. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the village of Lysebotn, which is situated at the head of the Lysefjord.
The final 2 kilometers leading up to the Kjerag boulder are relatively flat and will allow you to focus more on Norway’s beautiful wilderness. You hike on trails that have recently been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas, who used local stones and made overcoming the final (and steepest) slope a little easier.
Once you reach the edge of the mountain’s plateau, while standing on a 1000-meter-high cliff, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord. Cliff-side, you’ll have plenty of time to rest and enjoy your packed lunch. If you’re among the brave, you’ll have the opportunity to stand atop the Kjerag boulder!
A local nature guide with first-hand knowledge about the region will be with you, and the guides will share stories about the region's natural and cultural history. You will also be guided to the best viewpoints, and shown how to capture memorable photos.
After the lunch break, your guide will lead you back down to the Eagle’s Nest, which takes about 2 hours. You will then be driven through 26 hairpin turns along the (one and only!) road to the village of Lysebotn at the head of the Lysefjord. Here, you’ll board a speed-ferry.
The ferry will set-off navigating under steep mountain walls towering hundreds of meters above the fjord. The cruise will transport you further out the Lysefjord where you will pass waterfalls, abandoned farms, and the famous Preikestolen cliff, which towers 604 meters above sea-level.
Once back in Stavanger an overnight stay is both required and well deserved! If you are traveling back to Bergen, you travel by costal express bus after one or more nights in Stavanger. If you are traveling all the way back to Oslo, you travel by train from Bergen.
