Åndalsnes-Ålesund-Geiranger Tour

Travel on two of the most spectacular scenic rail journeys in Norway, the Dovrebanen and Raumabanen Railway and experience the amazing mountain capital of Åndalsnes! See the coastal Art Nouveau City of Ålesund and travel by boat on the amazing Geirangerfjord! Mighty mountains, fantastic fjords and captivating coastlines - All in one epic tour!

This amazing and epic tour gives you the chance to experience all of the major highlights of North-Western Norway as you travel on scenic trainrides through stunning mountain scenery, on fjord cruises to UNESCO-protected fjords and to cities and destinations internationally known for their spectacular beauty.

You start the tour from Oslo and along the way a minimum of two overnight stays are required, one in Ålesund and one in Åndalsnes. Note that we highly recommend spending some extra nights along the way, to take part in exiting activities or relaxing in the splendid nature of one of Norway's most scenic regions.

Spectacular Rail Journeys

Starting from Oslo you travel on the Dovrebanen Railway through the beautiful valley of Gudbrandsdalen. The train runs along the Lågen river, with its turquoise meltwater from the mountain glaciers. This beautiful ride will take you all the way to Dombås, where you change trains to embark on your next railway adventure, with the perhaps even more spectacular Rauma Railway.

Once you arrive at Dombås station, you board the Rauma Railway, and will get to experience one of the most spectacular scenic rail journeys in all of Norway. The rail journey passes the impending and majestic Trollveggen Cliff (The Troll Wall), spectacular waterfalls at the Kylling Bridge, and the emerald green Rauma River. The Trollveggen Cliff is the tallest perpendicular mountain cliff in Europe, 1.100 meters from the base to the summit!

After a train journey like no other you end up in Åndalsnes, beautifully located on the edge of the Romsdalsfjord. You will soon realize why this destination is so popular among Norwegians and why visitors to Norway are starting to add Åndalsnes to their bucketlist. The contrasts between the fjord and the surrounding mountains are truly striking, even by Norwegian standards.

Åndalsnes - Beautiful Scenery & Active Experiences

In Åndalsnes you will have easy access to some of the most spectacular mountains and viewpoints in Norway, such as the Romsdalseggen Ridge, the Trollveggen Cliff and The Rampestreken Viewpoint. This area is a mecca for hiking and mountain climbing, and there are excursions to suit all levels of fitness and experience.

The Romsdalstigen Via Ferrata is a thrilling climbing experience and one of the most popular and stunning activities here. Test you skills in the Intro Wall or the more advanced West Wall if you feel a bit like it. You can also go Stand-Up Paddleboarding or hike the Romsdalseggen with an experienced guide.

The Norwegian Mountaineering Centre is also a good tip for visitors. Here the history of mountain climbing in Norway is visualized through an exiting exhibition and you can also test out Norway’s highest indoor climbing wall!

From Åndalsnes you can easily get to the UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord by traveling through the magnificent engineering masterpiece of the Trollstigen Road. Or you can even experience one of the world’s most beautiful drives along the Romsdalsfjord on the world famous Atlantic Road.

In Åndalsnes you will also find that the local cuisine is second to none. There are several excellent cafés and restaurants featuring high quality local produce from the region. In short, Åndalsnes offers something for everyone!

Travel tip

The tour is available as a summer or winter tour and can be completed in two days. However, we recommend that you add at least an additional overnight stay in Åndalsnes to enjoy the beautiful scenery or participate in an exciting activity. There are lots of activities to choose from, and you add both overnight stays and activities in one easy booking operation, starting on this page.

Have a great trip!
